The Heartstory photography prize is made up of a signature Heartstory family photography session worth $200 and $1500 credit towards artwork, prints and digital files of their choice, with a total value of $1700. Our photos from Heartstory are nothing short of magical. Katie goes out of her way to make you feel comfortable and was amazing with our 2 year old. She made us feel special and unique. With both the maternity and newborn shoot she has managed to not only capture beautiful family photos, but intimate photos of a special time that truly celebrates what my body has achieved.

At the purchasing appointment Jeremy shared his knowledge and guided us in how to put together some amazing artwork from our photos. The whole experience is personal and warm. Both Katie and Jeremy are a joy to work with and their amazing work will live in our home for many years to come.

The Heartstory maternity & newborn photography experience

Maternity & newborn photography is an essential part of your family story. Katie is the exclusive newborn photographer for Heartstory. Maternity & newborn sessions take place at our beautiful natural light Belconnen studio. ‘Lifestyle’ means directed (but not posed), baby-led, and authentic. Our styling is organic, textural and nature-inspired, with a touch of boho.

‘These beautiful moments’ is a full service experience including the following:

1. Consultation

Over the phone. We get to know you, find out your hopes and wishes for your photos, and discuss things like location and styling. We book you for both sessions.

2. Maternity session

Recommended for when you are 32-36 weeks pregnant. On your own, or with children and/or partner. At our Belconnen studio with full access to our beautiful mama wardrobe (we have an ever-growing range of dresses, robes and dusters from well known brands like Spell, Hazel & Folk and Tree of Life).

3. Newborn session

Recommended for when bub is 10 days to 4 weeks old, but can be up to 6 weeks. For the whole family. At our Belconnen studio.

4. Purchasing appointment

You come back in for a personal appointment at our studio. Your decision-making game is strong. We create beautiful artwork for you to keep forever.

Our approach to maternity & newborn photography

Maternity and newborn photo sessions are held in our stunning, light-filled and comfortable Belconnen studio space, and your photos will be taken by Katie Kolenberg, two time winner of the prestigious AIPP Australian Family Photographer of the Year, and with 12 years family photography experience.

MATERNITY

You can bring your older children and/or partner to your maternity session, however, you are equally welcome (and in fact, encouraged) to take advantage of having this experience on your own. After all, it’s rare that we celebrate our bodies and the journey that we’re on, and this is an opportunity to do just that! We have an incredible client wardrobe available for you to use with pregnancy friendly dresses, dusters, robes and other pieces (scroll down for some pictures and check out the HIGHLIGHT on our instagram @heartstoryphotography). Our space is private, comfortable and the light is very flattering! Collections will be 20+ images, more if you bring your children or partner.

NEWBORN

Katie has a relaxed, go-with-the-flow approach to newborn sessions, which is unlike any other photographer in Canberra. Styling is natural, organic and textural, making use of the beautiful natural light in our studio, our amazing dried floral feature wall, our luxurious textile collection and whatever you bring with you on the day. Your collection of images will contain moments that are emotive, artistic, tear-jerking, funny, bursting with personality, and above all else, they will tell the unique story of you and your family. No formulas, gimmicks or uncomfortable posing. Sessions rarely go for longer than 90 minutes, even allowing time for bub to feed during the session. Baby handling is minimal. Collections will be 50+ images.

The maternity and newborn package was the most amazing experience with Heartstory and it really captured my entry in motherhood. Katie was very encouraging and made me feel so beautiful at both shoots and put me at ease immediately! The maternity shoot was so natural and calm. Heartstory have a beautiful and wide range of wardrobe for the shoots which meant I only needed to bring underwear for the shoot. I was not going to do maternity shots initially, now postpartum, I would regret it as I miss my belly!

The newborn shoot was very relaxed and calm and Katie had allowed a lot of time for the shoot, which I needed as my little man needed to be fed midshoot! This allowed me to have some breastfeeding shots which I was not planning. The images captured of my little newborn are so precious as he has grown so quickly, he was 10 days old for the shoot.

Jeremy and Katie’s photo reveal video at the viewing appointment was so sweet and adorable bought me to tears of happiness. The range of products made it very hard to choose, I decided on the beautiful leather book which published approx 30 of the photos. We basically put the book together right then and there!

I would highly recommend Heartstory and believe they are the number one place for natural and authentic pictures and no gimmicks. The package was a great value and captured amazing memories and very important milestones of my first pregnancy and journey into motherhood. Thanks Katie, Jeremy and Mel.

Full transparency: although this special offer represents significant value and there is no obligation to purchase, you will not be able to walk away from this experience with just a single framed 8×10″ print! Why? Because you’re going to love your photos and you have two sessions to choose from!

Your guarantee: it’s important that you feel safe and looked after during your experience with us, therefore we take full liability for the creation of your portrait collection. You don’t need to make any decisions or commitment to buy anything until your purchasing appointment. And even then, if you don’t want to purchase, or you don’t love your photos, you can just order your included print and nothing more. Rest assured, ‘hard-selling’ is not our style! We had the pleasure of having both our maternity and newborn photos done by this stellar team! Both Katie and Jeremy are warm and approachable. They were keen to learn more about us and build a unique experience for us - there was nothing cookie cutter about the sessions and we so appreciated their individualised approach. We found the whole process, from chats on the phone to discuss our vision to taking the actual photos to choosing the edited version to be professional and seamless. The quality of the photos they have produced for us is incredible. We thoroughly enjoyed working this dynamic team and we will definitely be back for more!

Katie and Jeremy do a phenomenal job. Not only in the final product, which is evident through their social media posts, but also in making you feel comfortable and supported throughout every part of the process (including when babies won't cooperate and when you're feeling overwhelmed for choice in the purchasing appointment!). Outdoors sessions

We photograph all over Canberra (we have different favourite locations in different seasons), taking advantage of our beautiful city and it's environmental features. Sessions are available morning and afternoon/evening on most weekends and some weekdays. We are usually booked out 1-2 months in advance.

Studio sessions

Studio sessions are available on weekdays and weekends at times that suit your little ones' routines. The studio is recommended for newborns and babies under one, but it's also great for older kids and families who prefer the indoors. We use natural light only, and our studio space is nature inspired, light and airy and a bit boho. We encourage relaxed clothing, like our approach!

Our creative style

We care a lot about emotion, personality and capturing you ‘in the moment’. We direct you during your session, but we don’t really ‘pose’ you. We want you to look real and for your photos to be an honest reflection of who you are! We also capture in between moments, environmental scenes and a lot of candid fun. We always take our cues from the smallest people in the family, and we work quite quickly to create a rich and diverse collection of images for you to choose from.

Heartstory took our family portraits last year and I can’t explain in words how amazing they were. For starters, the shoot was fun and relaxing for us all, the process pain free, and the finished product has all visitors to our home gobsmacked at the quality. About Babies in Bonnets™ // Award winning Canberra baby photography

About Babies in Bonnets™

Babies in Bonnets™ is a special photography project run by Heartstory – one of Australia’s most awarded and experienced family portrait photographers – for families with little ones aged 0-2 years old.

We love bonnets because they’re timeless and adorable, and they make toddlers look like babies again. They emphasise facial features and they remove the judgement of whether our babies look like girls or boys, and how much hair they do or don’t have! You only have to look at the photos from last year’s Babies in Bonnets™ project to see how sweet and precious they all looked, even the ones that walked themselves into the studio wearing shorts and teeshirts!

This project is an amazing opportunity to celebrate the magic of babyhood with gorgeously styled studio portraits of your baby – and your experience can include your whole family if you wish.

Join us as we create a beautiful collection of beautiful, natural and whimsical baby portraits that will be turned into a stunning coffee table book, to be a beautiful heirloom for the families in the project, and also available to buy at the conclusion of the project.

This project will also be raising funds for one of Australia’s most important charities: PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia).

About PANDA

Perinatal Anxiety and Depression affects 1/5 mothers and 1/10 fathers, so out of the 60 families selected for this project, 10+ of them will have been touched by this condition. And this includes your photographer. Katie had her second baby at the ripe old age of 42, 11 years after her first. She found that the support amongst health professionals during her pregnancy and after August was born was very different to what it was like 11 years previously, in part due to the amazing work PANDA does in supporting and educating perinatal caregivers. She made sure she had an amazing network around her of health professionals specialising in perinatal care. But despite this, Katie discovered she had postnatal anxiety when August was 9 months old and found PANDA to be an incredible resource, especially their online mental health checklist, designed to help parents find out if what they’re going through might be a little more than the stress and exhaustion of caring for a new baby. PANDA saves lives and provides vital support, which is even more necessary now that we don’t have villages raising our children. And after living and working in Canberra for the past 23 years, Katie knows that it is in this city where so many people move to for work, away from their family and support networks, where services like these become even more important.

Sadly, there is still a stigma around mental illness and new mums feel intense pressure to put on a brave face and get on with it, no matter what might be beneath the surface. As photographers, we meet hundreds of new parents every year and this topic is always on our minds. That’s why we’ve chosen to support this cause via this project. We want to start a conversation, raise awareness and build community while celebrating our beautiful, precious babes.

About the photographer

Your photographer is Katie Kolenberg, two time winner of Australian Family Photographer of the Year in 2015 and 2017, and owner of Heartstory.

Katie is a mother of two boys: August (2) and Toby (13) and she loves babies, especially when they’re wearing bonnets. Katie has been a professional family photographer for 12 years and her favourite subject to photograph is babies with their mamas. She also has the patience of a saint with toddlers (although she admits she’s not as patient with her own children!).

How the project works

We will photograph 60 portrait sessions and when we’re finished, we will design and publish a beautiful hard cover book called Babies in Bonnets™, featuring our favourite photo from each session we photograph, together with some meaningful words about motherhood.
Families will have the opportunity as part of their participation to have a full portrait session in our studio, which can include sibling photos and family photos, and will be able to purchase prints and products just like any other family who comes through our studio.
Participants will also have the option to do their own fundraising, to help raise further funds. Our total fundraising goal for Babies in Bonnets™ 2020 is $12,000.
