Which season is best for my outdoors family photos?

If you have the benefit of being able to plan well in advance – or even if you just want to get a bit of a big picture view on things – here is a list of pros and cons for each season that we think will be super helpful!

AUTUMN

Pros:Ā

  • Sessions happen earlier in the afternoon (ie, finished well before 5pm) so it’s a good move when you have babies or little kids.
  • The scenery/environment is extra colourful and beautiful.
  • Falling leaves can add an extra sense of fun and play to a session.

Cons:

  • The weather can be unpredictable, so you do need to be prepared in case of unexpected cold or warmth (this means choosing clothing that can be layered).
  • If you have little ones who nap early/mid afternoon, it will be smack-bang around the times we normally shoot.
  • Mornings can be frosty (this could also be a pro!).

WINTER

Pros:Ā

  • As per autumn, sessions happen earlier in the afternoon (ie, you’ll be finished well before 5pm) so it’s a good move when you have babies or little kids.
  • Winter light is totally magic.
  • Environmental colours tend to be the most neutral in winter and that could suit what you want on your walls. It also means you can really play with colour in your outfits if that’s your thang!
  • If you like the cold, some frost or fog on your session can be incredible.

Cons:

  • It’s cold. You have to be prepared with the right clothing!
  • Sometimes the environment can look a little bland for those who like green and rich colours.
  • As per autumn, if you have little ones who nap early/mid afternoon, it will be smack-bang around the times we normally shoot.

SPRING

Pros:Ā

  • It’s lush, green, very pretty, and there are often wildflowers around.
  • It’s not super hot, but you can still wear warm weather clothes (although it depends on the year, as Canberra can be changeable)
  • Toward the end of spring the grass gets long and gorgeous, but it’s not yet dry and hasn’t gone to seed.

Cons:

  • After daylight savings starts, sessions get later in the day, which can be a challenge for some families (but there are always mornings to choose from).
  • If you’re not a fan of green, we have to be careful with the location we choose because spring is generally very green!
  • The weather can be a bit unpredictable, especially in September and October, so it’s important to choose outfits that can be layered if there’s a cold snap!
  • Hayfever and other environmental allergies.

SUMMER

Pros:Ā

  • If you love summer, it’s warm, relaxing and golden in the evenings.
  • The wheaty, golden colour is amazing in photos, regardless of whether the sun is out or not.
  • We can have sessions by the river, and let the kids splash around and have a ball.
  • Evening sessions happen quite late, which can be convenient for older families with busy schedules.

Cons:

  • Grass seeds, thistles and flies can be a bother!
  • Sometimes it’s too hot!
  • Sometimes late evening sessions aren’t practical for young families.
