We take every August off, because it’s the quietest month of the year for family portraits. Because we work from home, it can be hard to take time off at home, so we go overseas and indulge our love of travel, with a bit of personal photography thrown in too! And the best thing about taking holidays in winter is that it’s summer on the other side of the world!!!
This year we spent three weeks in California. It’s such a diverse state that we couldn’t resist packing in as much as humanly possible: desert, coastline, mountains and cities. We drove and drove, and saw and loved it all.
We think our itinerary was pretty awesome, so if you’re planning a trip to California, we highly recommend doing what we did, which was as follows:
- Started with 3 days in Palm Springs & Joshua Tree National Park
- Drove to San Luis Obispo, and then spent 4 days exploring the coastline between there and Carmel-by-the-Sea
- Spent 4 days in and around San Francisco and San Jose
- Drove to Lake Tahoe for 3 days
- Traveled around Lake Tahoe to Mono Lake and through Yosemite from the Eastern side of the Sierra
- Spent 3 days in and around Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks
- Finished up with 4 days in LA, mostly around Venice.
It might be interesting to share that I didn’t shoot a whole lot on the ‘big’ camera during this trip (this is not out of the ordinary for me over the last few years), because I really, really, really love using my iPhone to take photos. It means I don’t have to make any decisions other than seeing the moment and framing it, and it’s very liberating. Jeremy on the other hand, can’t bear to travel without a full kit, and this time he even took his Hasselblad.
Here is just a small selection of moments to treasure (all shot on the ‘big’ camera, and a pretty even mix of both of us)…
