The Heartstory photography experience
Having your family photographed is a celebration of you—your story, the love you share and your ‘right now’.
Jeremy Byrnes and Katie Kolenberg (the owners and principal photographers at Heartstory, est. 2009) are award winning family portrait specialists and two of the most experienced family photographers in the region. They are known for how they connect with children and babies, their fun approach to families, their use of the natural environment and our creative vision. They provide personal, customised service and unique heirloom products, for every taste and budget.
Katie is the exclusive newborn photographer for Heartstory and also photographs the majority of all family studio sessions with babies in our beautiful natural light Belconnen space. Our approach is baby-led, authentic and natural. Our styling is organic, textural and nature-inspired, with a touch of boho.
Our full service experience includes the following:
1. Consultation
Over the phone. We get to know you, find out your hopes and wishes for your photos, and discuss things like location and styling. We book you in for your session.
2. Photography session
At our Heartstory HQ, our natural light Belconnen studio with full access to our beautiful mama wardrobe (we have an ever-growing range of dresses, robes and dusters from well known brands like Spell, Hazel & Folk and Tree of Life). You have an absolute blast being photographed by us and we capture all the magic.
4. Purchasing appointment
You come back in for a personal appointment at our studio. Your decision-making game is strong. We create beautiful artwork for you to keep forever.
WHEN TO HAVE YOUR SESSION
There’s never a bad time to book a photo session! But if timing works out, we recommend the following:
NEWBORN (10 days to 4 weeks old)
Katie has a relaxed, go-with-the-flow approach to newborn sessions, which is unlike any other photographer in Canberra.This is not a posed, baby-in-basket kind of session. This is intimate, baby-led, authentic and includes the whole family. Katie works quite quickly and you will unlikely be at the studio for your newborn session for more than 90 minutes, even allowing time for bub to feed during the session. >>view photos

TUMMY TIME (3-5 months)
Sessions take about 45 minutes, and can include sibling and family moments as well as focusing on individual portraits of your baby at their cutest age. Some babies at this age aren’t a fan of tummy time, but we can capture equally gorgeous moments on their back or in your arms! These sessions are all about snuggles and smiles. >>view photos
SITTER (6-9 months)
We recommend grabbing the time when bub is sitting comfortably on their own, but not yet crawling. This is perfect for capturing their growing personality, letting them play with things that make them happy (which includes you and their siblings) and having fun with different outfit choices. >>view photos
FIRST BIRTHDAY
The best way to celebrate this milestone is with photos! Please note, we don’t do cake smash sessions. Instead we do personalised sessions unique to you and your family. This is about emotive, fun and baby-led photography that focuses on the birthday boy or girl wherever they’re at! ThE STUDIO SPACE
Our studio photography space is nature-inspired, light and airy and a bit boho. The styling and colour palette is organic and textural, making use of beautiful natural light, our amazing dried floral feature wall, our luxurious textile collection and whatever you bring with you on the day. Your collection of images will contain moments that are emotive, artistic, tear-jerking, funny, bursting with personality, and above all else, they will tell the unique story of you and your family. No formulas, gimmicks or uncomfortable posing. Collections usually have 50+ images.
Sessions for babies (and their families) are available on weekdays and selected weekends, at times that suit your little ones’ routines. We encourage relaxed clothing, like our approach and we provide a ‘what to wear’ guide. We also have a studio wardrobe full of flowy, feeding friendly dresses that you are welcome to use.
PRICING & PRODUCTS
Full transparency: although this special offer represents significant value and there is no obligation to purchase, you will not be able to walk away from this experience with just a single framed 8×10″ print! Why? Because you’re going to love your photos and you have two sessions to choose from!
Your guarantee: it’s important that you feel safe and looked after during your experience with us, therefore we take full liability for the creation of your portrait collection. You don’t need to make any decisions or commitment to buy anything until your purchasing appointment. And even then, if you don’t want to purchase, or you don’t love your photos, you can just order your included print and nothing more. Rest assured, ‘hard-selling’ is not our style! And, if you’re budget conscious, all the information you need is available for you to look at before your book.
We believe that professional portraits deserve pride of place in your home and not lost in the digital clutter of our daily lives, so we have spent many years perfecting our product range to suit contemporary tastes, lifestyles and budgets. You can choose from prints, wall art and albums, and digital files can also be included.
- Matted prints start at $795 for a set of four 8×10″ prints (entry level best value for money)
- Single image framed wall art starts at $695 and multiple image framed wall art starts at $795 (entry level best value for money)
- Digital files can be purchased in small packs ($1000 for 4) or they are complimentary with bigger packages.
- Matching digital files are complimentary with all orders of prints and artwork over $1500
- Signature wall collections with 3-4 individual pieces start at $2495.
Most families invest $800 to $3000 on their portrait collection. Payment plans are available.

OUR CREATIVE STYLE
We care a lot about emotion, personality and capturing you ‘in the moment’. We direct you during your session, but we don’t really ‘pose’ you. We want you to look real! We also capture in between moments and a lot of candid fun. We always take our cues from the smallest people in the family, and we work quite quickly to create a rich and diverse collection of images for you to choose from.
Most families say ‘I knew they’d be good, but I didn’t think they’d be this good.’

Terms & conditions
- Sessions must be booked by December 20th 2024 and take place by end of February 2025.
- This offer is not available for currently booked sessions, pending gift certificate bookings, or sessions that are pending a reschedule.
- This offer can be used by families with old siblings, as long as the youngest member of the family is under 1, or turning 1 around the time of the session. Your session can be booked for any time during baby’s first year, including our recommended ages of newborn, 3-5 months, sitter or 1 year birthday session. If newborn, session must be booked before baby is born.
- You may not transfer or combine your session or this offer to any other package, promotion, prize, gift certificate, or special projects like Babies in Bonnets.
- This offer cannot be used for at home or location sessions. Sessions must take place in our studio. Newborn sessions are only available on weekdays.
- The package fee is due at the time of booking and is non-refundable if you decide to discontinue with your booking for any reason.
- The offer includes a framed print of your choice. No digital files are included in this offer, but are available to purchase at your purchasing appointment as part of our packages.
